Kiwix lets you view Wikipedia offline

I was browsing Sourceforge today and I stumbled upon a great open-souce program called Kiwix that lets you view Wikipedia when you’re offline. They provide a Bittorrent link for a 10GB ZIM file which contains every article on Wikipedia current to January 2012. Unfortunately, the current ZIM file does not contain the accompanying pictures, but a 10GB file size will allow the world’s largest encyclopedia to be stored on a single 20$ USB drive. The potential applications for Kiwix are varied and interesting. Parents who want to limit their children’s access to the internet, school’s in remote areas of the world with no internet access, prisons, airline passengers and just about anyone out of range of an internet connection could utilize Kiwix. The night before one of my final college term papers was due, the house next door caught fire and I lost my internet connection in the middle of writing it. I ended up turning in a half written paper and getting a C in the class. I missed graduating with honors by a fraction of a point because of that term paper. It would have been nice to have a program like Kiwix about ten years ago during that fiasco. Kiwix should run on just about any laptop or desktop, regardless of your operating system.
