I just read an excellent article by way of Slashdot.org
about a Bay Area elementary school teacher who created a Linux-based computer
lab without spending a single dollar. He took 18 slow and outdated Windows
desktop computers that were infected with spyware, and installed Ubuntu with
Apache OpenOffice on them instead. After
a fresh install of Linux, most of the “broken” Windows machines miraculously
started running again. The project was so successful, that the teacher is now
switching schools to start another Linux based lab. The article is definitely
worth a read.
For those of you who might be unfamiliar with OpenOffice,
here is a explanation directly from their website: "Apache OpenOffice is the leading
open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets,
presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is available in many languages
and works on all common computers. It stores all your data in an international
open standard format and can also read and write files from other common office
software packages. It can be downloaded and used completely free of charge for
any purpose."
